the mom phrase

BECAUSE I SAID SO!
yup, i'm using it. to follow up my "why generation" post....
this is my response to those why questions.
it shouldn't matter why, i am the mom and i said so - do it!
(mom, are you laughing now?)

the "why" generation

todd said this is the "why" generation....don't know if he heard it, or coined it, but i totally agree. when a child is told what to do their answer isn't "yes sir" or "yes ma'am", their next action isn't to do exactly what they've been told....
the thing that comes out their mouth next, as they continue to do or not do what they have been asked is WHY?
"x, stop jumping on your bed"
"why?"
"c, please bring me that plate."
"why?"
in theory, it is good to ask questions, to get more information, but it is as if they are untrusting or questioning authority.
this is a big problem for us right now...and a big problem in the world. lack of responsibility and respect, i believe that it stems from this "why" generation.
so what can we do to fix it?

the impossible

xander never ceases to amaze.

(if you are one of those that doesn't enjoy reading blogs bragging about someones' kids then you can tune out now, cause it is all about bragging tonight!)

tonight's game was sure to be called due to inclement weather...but as we sat in our cars at 7:20 for a 7:25 start, and watched the rain continue to fall we were amazed that the league had not done just that. they let these 5-6 yr old boys play out in the cold wet weather.
so, we get out to the field. get the boys in the dug out. i'm toting an umbrella and cassidy, todd is toting an umbrella, the snack bag and a packing blanket and we are standing watching the stalwart, brave, and wet little boys as they play the game they love. xander was still so excited he was jumping around in the dug out and slipped and fell twice. his pants were muddy, his socks and even his sweatshirt.

the team we played against was coached by our fall season coach and we knew his son, who was also on the team with xander in the fall.

so our team bats first. no outs, well hit balls, five runs....now we take the field. (x would have batted next, so he was geared up to go, more on that later)

coach baillie gives the field positions and xander lets out a "YES" with a little leap when he is told he is playing circle. (circle is where the pitcher would stand, but for t-ball one player stands there with the coach from the other team while he pitches. "time" is called when the ball gets back to the player in the circle. all motion on the field stops. very important position)

so last season when xander was in the circle he did a whole lot of dancing and even some pirouettes for us. i was worried. i knew he was already excited about the game and playing in the rain and now the circle...

but like i said, he amazes. he was baseball ready.so cute standing there with his hands on his knees chewnig a piece of gum. he ran down the few balls that were hit, scooped up a ground ball and tried running down the batter to first, was there when the other players needed to get the ball back to him and end the play. he was doing really well.

so now runners are on first and second. then the other coach's son was up to bat. he was a good little player, natural talents. his dad pitches, he connects and the ball is a line drive heading toward third/short stop, going right outside the circle where xander was standing. he jumped as the ball was hit and leaned out to the right (with his left hand, glove hand) and caught the ball. we were all so amazed at the catch...but it didn't stop there.

for whatever reason the other team's coaches' didn't send their runners back to their bases (or maybe they were just moving really slow) but x's coaches told him to run and tag second, so he did, and once there they told him to run and tag first (they knew what was going on even if no one else did, thanks goodness!) so he tagged first.... unassisted triple play!

todd was astounded, i was still trying to figure out what had just happened and xander didn't even realize what he had done. his coaches were cheering for the "x-man" and his teammates chnated "triple play, triple play".

so it was raining, no cameras, no video, nothing to document this impossible feat except to write it down.

that ended the inning, by then the rain had not let up at all and it was getting colder. there was no way for the other team to catch up to us (each team is only allowed 5 runs per inning) so the officials called the game. crazy! the team lined up, shook hands and then decided to keep on batting. they let the rest of the lineup bat through starting with xander. the boys were wet, but i didn't think they even noticed the cold. i know xander didn't. he was having way too much fun.

so our little ball player amazes us once again.

xander really enjoys computer games and video games. i am pretty sure even though he can't read he figures them out faster than i do. my brain just doesn't work like that....

"i believe i can fly...."

stacked

another ball game tonight.
xander was totally ready to go, without my help even, as i was sound asleep with cassidy. but he got his uniform, belt, crocs, etc. and woke me up. can he please stop growing. don't get me wrong, love that he can do it all himself, but where did my baby go?
so the team tonight...stacked, for sure. i try to ignore what the other parent's are saying they heard when they start talking about the opposing team, cause i usually don't want to hear it. like tonight...all older 6 year olds, playing together for several seasons, coach used to play for clemson, they can bat, throw and catch....don't want to hear that my baby is about to get pounced on cause the other team managed to get a roster put together to do just that.
for a few minutes we thought maybe our boys scared them, getting some outs in the field and putting out some really good at bats. but, in the end, we did get trounced.
ahhh, as long as the boys don't know the extent of it, they just play and have fun.
think x will look like that when he is six?

so todd started a new online photo site to hold all these pictures we've been taking. just t-ball pictures to share with the other team parents. each game his goal is 500 pictures, cause he figures that is how long the battery will hold out. so check it out. i'll still post some here, but for the full extent of pictures go to http://photobucket.com/gptballcubs

rain date & "the wall"

so x's second game got rained out....guess when they reschedule games?!? yup, sundays. he is so cool about it, but i feel terrible.

well his third game i had to miss for a rs event at church. i got a phone call after his game asking when i would be home...soon (which usually means in the next two hours...so fun talking stephanie!) but i asked how his game went. his comment "great, great, great! i was a wall. i didn't let anything past me!"
turns out our little ball player really did great. he stopped several ground balls in the out field (which is where the opposing team was actually hitting them!) and almost caught a fly ball. he also had a triple tonight, thanks to some over-throwing by the other team, but again, he watched the base coaches and safely made it to third. he was so excited. he really loves this. i found him asleep with his eye black patches (green for st. patricks day) still on.

did i mention, he got the game ball for his outstanding defensive skills? go x-man!

it's a tie!

xander's first official game as a cub ends in a tie.
he did great. got on base his two times up. ran the bases well...really well in fact, cause as he was rounding second to go to third the ball rolled right up to the short stop (on one of its trips around the field and the players try to get it to the pitcher to stop the play). anyway, he most likely would have been tagged out, smart third base coach signaled him back to second, where he went safely! he spent the first two innings in right field. he is quick to jump to action, no matter where the ball ends up. then coaches had him play at short stop for the second half of the game. he had two or three really good stops there. he is so energetic and sometimes so eager to help out the play that he is known to run into the outfield from a position like short stop. but these grounders were right up his alley, and nothing past him! way to go x-man. you love it. we love you and we love watching you love it!

all is....

it is definitely time for a new post, and time to catch up on my "365" pictures that we've been taking. i just wish i had more time. so for now...all is good, all is well, all is still busy.
hopefully more this weekend, after xander plays his first games with the cubs!
